An important service which we have instituted is a unique brain damaged infant panel comprised of 14 obstetrical and pediatric subspecialties. Of particular note and one of the foundations of our panel is our placental pathology group. They will examine placentas microscopically for abnormalities which may cause fetal anoxia. In addition substances that some stressed babies produce, namely cytokines, will cause brain damage in the neonate. Using these two modalities combined with a careful review of birth events we find we can provide significant support in defending obstetricians. Unfortunately those who have not responded appropriately to signs of fetal distress cannot be defended.
